IRCC accepts Super Visa insurance paid monthly, as long as the policy is issued and a deposit is paid. Protecto offers monthly Super Visa plans, including for visitors aged 86 and over. A monthly plan has a few rules of its own, and they matter most when plans change.

The short answer
- The policy still covers a full year and at least $100,000. Only the payment is spread out.
- You pay a deposit at purchase, then the rest monthly by credit card.
- Fees apply, depending on the contract. Compare the 12-month total with the pay-in-full price.
- The deposit is not always refundable. That is the point to check before you choose monthly.
Activate the policy before your parent flies
Depending on the contract, a monthly policy only starts covering once it is activated. If it is activated after your parent arrives in Canada, a waiting period can apply. Confirm the arrival date with your advisor and make sure the policy is active before the flight.
When the deposit is not refunded
- Visa refused: the premium paid is refunded, with proof of the refusal, less the fees set by the contract. Keep IRCC’s letter and ask quickly.
- Visa approved, but your parent does not come: depending on the contract, the deposit may not be refunded. If your parent may not travel, tell your advisor before you buy.
- Once your parent has arrived in Canada: depending on the contract, the deposit is no longer refundable.
- Your parent leaves early: the payments stop once the insurer accepts the early cancellation, with proof of departure such as a boarding pass.
A missed payment can end the coverage
If a monthly payment fails and is not made up within the time the contract allows, the policy ends on the date the last payment covered. Depending on the contract, it cannot be put back in force.
Two consequences:
- Your parent is no longer insured for anything that happens after that date.
- IRCC expects the insurance to be maintained during the stay, and proof can be requested at the border.
Use a credit card that stays valid for the full year, and update it before it expires.
Monthly payments at any age, including 86 and over
Monthly payment is available at every age we insure for the Super Visa, including 86 and over. The plans that offer it vary with age and health, so ask an advisor which one fits your parent, especially if a pre-existing condition needs to be covered.
Checklist before choosing monthly
- The credit card stays valid for the full year.
- You know when coverage starts, and whether the policy must be activated.
- You know what happens to the deposit if the visa is approved but your parent does not travel.
- You compared the 12-month total, fees included, with the pay-in-full price.
- The certificate shows a one-year policy in force, even though it is paid monthly.
