Super Visa insurance: frequently asked questions
IRCC requirements, the $100,000 minimum, the one-year term, refunds if the application is refused, extensions. Answers to questions about Super Visa insurance.
The Super Visa requires proof of private medical insurance before the application is even filed. The criteria are specific, and a quote does not count as proof.
Here is exactly what IRCC asks for, what happens if the application is refused, and how to manage the policy once your parents or grandparents have arrived in Canada.
What is Super Visa insurance?
Super Visa insurance is emergency medical insurance for parents and grandparents applying for a Super Visa to come to Canada.
It helps cover certain unexpected medical costs, including emergency care, hospitalization and repatriation. This insurance is mandatory in order to submit a Super Visa application.
What is the difference between visitor insurance for Canada and Super Visa insurance?
Super Visa insurance is essentially visitor insurance for Canada that meets specific requirements for coverage amount and duration.
Unlike ordinary visitor insurance, it is mandatory in order to submit a Super Visa application. In particular, it must provide at least $100,000 in coverage and be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada.
What are the Super Visa insurance requirements?
To meet the Government of Canada’s requirements, the insurance policy must:
- provide minimum coverage of $100,000;
- be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada;
- cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation;
- be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit;
- be valid on each entry into Canada;
- be issued by an eligible insurer under IRCC requirements.
A quote or price estimate alone is not accepted as proof of insurance.
Do I need to buy the insurance before applying for the Super Visa?
Yes. Compliant proof of medical insurance must be provided with your Super Visa application.
The policy must be purchased and paid in full, or under an eligible instalment plan with a deposit. An unpaid quote is not enough.
How can I buy Super Visa insurance without knowing my exact arrival date in Canada?
You can purchase your Super Visa insurance using an approximate arrival date. If your trip is moved up or delayed, the coverage start date can generally be changed before you arrive in Canada.
Updated Super Visa proof of insurance showing the corrected date can then be sent to you.
For any change, you must contact Protecto Assurances before the coverage start date shown on your policy.
Can I pay for Super Visa insurance in instalments?
Yes, some plans let you pay for Super Visa insurance in instalments with an initial deposit.
The payment plans offered by Protecto Assurances meet IRCC requirements. The terms, fees and deposit amount can vary by insurer.
What does Super Visa insurance cover?
Super Visa insurance generally covers eligible costs related to an unexpected medical emergency during the stay in Canada, including:
- emergency medical consultations;
- hospitalization;
- ambulance services;
- certain diagnostic tests;
- certain prescription medications;
- medical transport and repatriation.
Amounts, exclusions and conditions can vary by plan. Consult your policy for the exact coverage.
Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?
Some Super Visa insurance plans can cover emergencies related to pre-existing medical conditions when those conditions are considered stable for a set period before coverage begins.
The definition of stable and the length of the stability period vary by age, insurer and plan. A change in medication, dosage, treatment or symptoms can affect coverage.
Protecto Assurances can help you compare the options based on the age and health of the person to be insured.
What is a deductible in Super Visa insurance?
The deductible is the amount you remain responsible for in the event of a claim, according to the conditions of your policy.
A higher deductible can reduce the price of the insurance, but it increases the amount you could have to pay in a medical emergency. It is therefore important to choose a deductible that suits your budget.
How much does Super Visa insurance cost?
The price of Super Visa insurance depends mainly on:
- the age of the insured person;
- the length of the coverage;
- the coverage amount chosen;
- the deductible;
- coverage of pre-existing medical conditions;
- the plan and insurer selected.
Comparing several options helps you find a good balance between price, coverage and contract conditions.
What happens if my Super Visa application is refused?
Depending on the insurer and the policy conditions, a refund can generally be requested if your Super Visa application is refused.
A copy of the official refusal letter may be required. Conditions, timeframes and administrative fees can vary by insurer.
Contact Protecto Assurances before your coverage start date so we can check the options that apply to your policy.
Can I change the start date of my Super Visa insurance?
Yes. The insurance start date can generally be changed if your arrival in Canada is moved up or delayed.
You must contact Protecto Assurances before the coverage start date shown on your policy. Updated proof of insurance can then be sent to you.
Can I extend or renew my Super Visa insurance?
Yes. If your insurance expires before you leave Canada, contact Protecto Assurances to extend or renew it and avoid a gap in coverage.
Your passport and your medical insurance must remain valid throughout your stay in Canada.
Extending your insurance does not automatically extend your authorized stay. A separate application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada may be required.
Do I need to show proof of insurance when I arrive in Canada?
Yes. Your insurance must be valid on each entry into Canada.
A border services officer may ask to see your proof of insurance. It is recommended to keep it with your passport and your other travel documents.
How long can you stay in Canada with a Super Visa?
The Super Visa generally allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time. It allows multiple entries over a period of up to ten years.
The authorized length of each stay is determined by Canadian authorities and can depend on passport validity, among other factors.
Does Super Visa insurance guarantee the application will be approved?
No. Medical insurance is a mandatory requirement, but it does not guarantee Super Visa approval.
The applicant and their child or grandchild in Canada must also meet the other eligibility criteria, including financial requirements, the invitation letter, the medical exam and the general conditions of entry into Canada.
